На воровской сходке Чалый доказывает, что у Гангрены, с помощью Павливкера добившегося власти в Петрово, был злой умысел. Гангрена в панике бежит со сходки, но Чалый и Якут догоняют и убивают его. Копенкин вопреки плану Козырева идет к Мельнику и предупреждает его о грозящей ему опасности со стороны милиции и Павливкера.
