В частное детективное агентство обратилась немолодая и немного странная женщина Ираида, которая наотрез отказалась рассказать о своем деле молодым сотрудникам «Мангуста» Зосе и Яну, зато сразу же прониклась доверием к Манохину. Оказывается, Ираиду преследует маньяк, одетый в подозрительное длинное черное пальто и широкополую шляпу, скрывающую его лицо. Он появляется то около ее дома, то вблизи библиотеки, где Ираида работает.
