The year 1939. Life in Kresy goes on lazily, despite more and more frequent news about the coming war. Adolescent peers Zbyszek and Wasylko compete with each other in every field. They are in love with the same girl - Aksinya. Wasylko conspires with Ukrainian nationalists, which forces Antonii to save him from the police. Soon the Germans invade Poland and Antoni is mobilized. Meanwhile, in Breslau, Peter and Lisa are getting married. Goldstein wants to transfer his property to Karl to protect it from confiscation as Jewish property. In return, he asks for help in escaping abroad. Lisa graduates with honors from medicine and takes a full-time position at the clinic.
