It's 8:23 at night in January 1989 and a routine commuter flight from Heathrow to Belfast is in crisis. After flames were seen in one of the plane's engines, the pilots shut down the right-hand engine. Flying on just one engine the flight diverts to East Midlands Airport and is preparing for an emergency landing, when the remaining engine loses all power.
And between the plane and the airport lies the M1 motorway.
On board the Boeing 737 400 are 118 passengers who experience the nightmare of a flight that crashes just yards from the landing strip, and onto the crowded motorway. The crash claims the lives of 74 passengers.
It is one of the worst accidents in British aviation history.
In this episode we explore the remarkable story of Flight British Midland 092 told by those who survived. Using vivid dramatic reconstruction, state-of-the-art special effects and first-hand testimony, Channel 5 takes viewers into the cabin and the cockpit as passengers experience the flight which changed aviation.
