For a period of 60 years, between 1850 and 1910, about a quarter of Sweden's population left the country to seek a brighter future and existence in the United States. This is the story of the great emigration. The hosts Erik Haag and Lotta Lundgren tell about the time when a significant part of Sweden's population emigrated to America.
In the program we meet Erik and Lotta as farmers in the mid 1800s. One day, their strange neighbors announce that they are considering emigrating to America. Now, Lotta and Erik must try their lives as foreigners and find out why so many people chose to break up and leave all they owned and had in Sweden to take the trip over the Atlantic in the dream of a better life.
